Multilingualism: Linguistic development with a global outlook

At Vermont School, multilingualism is key to our academic education. English is our second language and is taught in a natural and immersive way from Kinder 4, with the aim that students master it as an academic and social tool.

In addition, we incorporate Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language from Stage 4 to Stage 9, a deepening that broadens their horizons and prepares them to be global citizens capable of understanding both the Western and Eastern worlds.

How do our students learn at Vermont School?

At Vermont School, English is learned in a natural, progressive and immersive way, enabling students to become fluent from the earliest years.

From Kinder 4, children are exposed to the language through games, interactive activities and early stimulation, developing their communication skills spontaneously.

In Primary, the approach becomes more structured, incorporating reading, writing and speaking, ensuring that students gain confidence and accuracy in their use of the language.

In Middle School and High School, English is deepened with critical thinking, argumentation and written production, preparing students for the International Baccalaureate (IB) and their academic and professional futures in international settings.

Mandarin as a Foreign Language

From Stage 4, students learn Mandarin Chinese, the most widely spoken language in the world, as part of our foreign language training. This teaching enables them to learn about the rich cultural and economic richness of the Eastern world, developing language skills and a global understanding that complements their comprehensive, bilingual education.
