Vermont Skills: Volleyball as a Lesson in Teamwork and Growth

Each time the ball crosses the net, something more than a point is at stake. Confidence grows, friendships strengthen, and every movement becomes part of a larger learning experience. Through the Vermont Skills program, sports like volleyball help students discover that learning also means connecting, leading, and supporting one another.

Volleyball has become one of the most vibrant activities at Vermont School, with more than one hundred girls training consistently throughout the week. Each serve, each practice, and each shared victory reflect dedication, enthusiasm, and teamwork. Beyond athletic ability, the game teaches essential life skills such as communication, resilience, and leadership, shaping students who approach every challenge with confidence and joy.

Research from UNESCO shows that school sports strengthen cognitive, emotional, and social skills. This is evident every day at Vermont School, where students learn to make quick decisions, to stay calm under pressure, and to celebrate others’ success as their own. What happens on the court mirrors the values we believe in as a community, including respect, empathy, and perseverance.

Coach Darwin leads this journey with consistency and care, guiding athletes through reflection and experience so that growth becomes a habit. His training integrates focus, teamwork, and purpose, which is the essence of Vermont Skills. Learning happens through meaningful experiences and without grades.

“Sports are training for life: every effort, every mistake, and every achievement build character and determination”.
Coach Darwin, Volleyball Coach, Vermont School

Volleyball at Vermont School is not just a sport. It is an expression of our belief that education must integrate body, mind, and values as one. Each match reminds us that when we move together, we grow together, and that is what makes our community truly Vermont.
